Annual Internal Security Report 2023 – Incidents in the School Environment

The Annual Internal Security Report (RASI), published on May 28, 2024, aggregates global crime records reported to various internal security bodies, processing and analysing different types of crimes to present a comprehensive overview of the national criminological landscape, revealing trends, patterns, and geographical incidences.

In section 3.5, “School Safety,” the RASI, using data from the GNR and PSP, reports that during the 2022/23 school year, security forces recorded 6,821 incidents under the “Safe School” program, representing an increase of 12.4%.

The RASI highlights the following incidents within the school environment: 8 bomb threats, 943 thefts, 113 robberies, 84 instances of weapon possession/use, 300 cases of vandalism/damage, 1,313 incidents of insults/threats, 2,065 offenses against physical integrity, 178 cases of drug possession/use, and 157 sexual offenses.

Regarding geographical distribution, the regions with the highest number of incidents are: 1,831 in Lisbon, 1,218 in Porto, 794 in Setúbal, 383 in Aveiro, 364 in Faro, 311 in Braga, 256 in Santarém, and 232 in Leiria.
