On 14 October 2024, Portugal’s PSP police launched a nationwide operation in schools, titled ‘Bullying is for Wimps,’ alongside a social media …
Bullying is unwanted, aggressive behavior among
school-age children that involves a real or perceived power imbalance. The
behavior is repeated or has the potential to be repeated over time. Bullying
includes several types, such as verbal bullying, social bullying, and physical
bullying.
It includes actions such as making threats, spreading rumors,
attacking someone physically or verbally, and excluding someone from a group on
purpose.
Bullying can occur during or after school hours. While most reported
bullying happens in the school building, a significant percentage also occurs
in places like on the playground or the bus.
It can also happen traveling to or
from schools, in the youth’s neighborhood, or on the Internet.
The overall goal of SAFE project is to
safeguard the rights and facilitate the empowerment of children and teens aged
6-17 against bullying and other types of violence, with particular attention to
children and teenagers from communities at risk of social exclusion. The
project intends to achieve this by producing, testing, and validating a
psycho-educational sport program that tackles bullying. Thus, SAFE project
aligns with and supports the implementation of the EU guidelines on stopping
bullying through education and sport. In addition, it aims to promote social
inclusion, equality, and nondiscrimination in and beyond school and sport.
The anti-bullying
psycho-education sport programme aims to promote early intervention in
children and teenagers by developing key cognitive, emotional, and behavioral
skills that are tailored to their specific needs. To achieve this, this
comprehensive program will: deconstruct irrational beliefs, stereotypes, and
prejudices; prepare for the concepts of self protection and borderline
situations; teach how to use non-verbal language; develop physical
self-protection skills; promote coping strategies when faced with limiting
situations (telling, not accepting, denouncing, not allowing).
The proposed anti-bullying psycho-education
sport programme involves working with school clusters, associations and
municipalities, involving the whole educational community in the various stages
of project development, from needs mapping to programme implementation, testing
and validation, including dissemination and further exploitation of the
programme and its innovative educational resources.
The target groups of SAFE project are:
- children from 6 to 11 years of age (middle
childhood), children from 12 to 14 years of age (young teens) and teenagers
from 15 to 17 years of age - the main target group of the project;
- professionals whose activity is oriented to
develop students’ knowledge, skills and attitudes, such as teachers, trainers,
facilitators, coaches, guiders - a secondary target group of the project;
- family members of the above-mentioned
children and teenagers – a secondary target group of the project.
Field
research and needs analysis - This activity is to conduct field research among youth and children in
Bulgaria and Portugal, ensuring variety of sociodemographic contexts, to
understand bullying stories taking place across different contexts. The field
research will gather a more in-depth, real and detailed information of the
concrete target groups allowing to fill the gaps of the existing data.
Design
of the programme -The activity is to design the SAFE psycho-education sport programme to
tackle bullying. This program shall be a program of integration and motivation,
in which the goal is for all children to be happy, active, and rational, but
above all to be deterrents to violence, and that cooperation between each child
to become a rule and a value in each school.
Production
of teaching and learning aids - This activity is to design and produce teaching and learning aids to
support the implementation of SAFE programme, i.e., all tools and resources
intended to enhance learning, supplement instructions, reinforce concepts and
skills and stimulate the interest of the learners.
Pilot
implementation and validation -This activity is to pilot, to experiment the produced programme
and materials in a realistic setting. The pilot is aimed to check about the match
between the programme and its objectives, proving the viability of the
programme, identifying any deficiencies or weaknesses to be corrected. The
program will be tested by teachers/trainers and facilitators and 4 groups of
learners. The pilot activity will be organised in training sessions held by each
partner with the support of associated partners whenever necessary.
Sharing and multiplier events - This activity includes all the physical
multiplier events and communication actions aimed at sharing and disseminating
SAFE project results and experience, as well as raising awareness about the bullying
problem. SAFE Info Day Portugal and SAFE Info Day Bulgaria will be events for sharing
project outcomes, and sharing testimonies about the pilot experience by
children, teens and teachers/trainers/facilitators. In parallel, an online and
TV anti-bullying campaign will be launched in Portugal and Bulgaria to address
the effects of bullying in schools.
ACADEMIA WE FIGHT
Academia We Fight is a self-defense school,
with a curricular basis from Kravmaga but adapted to our society, focusing on
preventing dealing with bullying through conflict communication, building
self-belief, physical skills and resilient mindset. Our focus is, at an early
stage, to limit the excessive instruction of techniques, choosing rather to
transmit concepts and principles of training that make those who seek us to be
able, in a faster way, to assimilate, understand, and above all to believe that
what is passed on to them has a reasoned and objective logic. Likewise, in
children's classes we aim to instill values of self-confidence, discipline and
respect for others. This combination between physical and mental training makes
the evolution of the child, as human being, much more sustainable. Our major
goal is health promotion. We believe that in a healthy body lives a healthy
mind and that physical well-being is essential for building good self-esteem.
